Ice Skating
For a cool, couples-only engagement shoot, venture to an outdoor skating rink in mid-December and ask your photographer to snap some pics on ice skates. It’s not for everyone—wedding photographers will warn you about their difficult shooting conditions (like little room for error)—but if you’re up for it, let them capture your well-choreographed moves on a natural backdrop. It doesn’t hurt that you’ll get to wear beautiful clothes while doing it! Ask your photographer if they have ice skates available or rent some skates from an ice rink before heading over.
Snowball Fight
A lot of these ideas also work well for any other time you want to get a bunch of friends together for a photoshoot, such as proposals. Snow is an excellent element to use and can be easily incorporated into just about any session. Build up some artificial snow in your back garden or schedule a shoot with your local park in advance; add real snow on top and you’ll have something truly memorable. Be sure that whoever you choose as your photographer has his or her insurance squared away (and knows how to stay safe on icy surfaces) before heading out. If you don’t live in an area where it snows, buy some fake snow—it makes beautiful pictures!

On Christmas Morning
If you want to go with a classic, ask their parents for permission first. Have your photographer wait at their house and hide behind a tree with a camera while you present their parents (with baubles on your jacket lapels and mistletoe in hand) your ring. Tell them it’s time for everyone to get together for one last family photo, then turn around and pull out that engagement ring! They will be surprised (to say the least). This is also very cute if they haven’t told their parents yet—their reactions are definitely something worth remembering.
